Guide to HO Scale Model Railroad Trains 4 x 8 Foot Benchwork

Building bench-work for the first time for your model railroad is an exciting moment! To create a good first layout for HO scale model trains, a great way to start is with a basic plan for 4 x 8 foot bench-work. You are essentially building a table from a piece of plywood and will construct your exciting new layout on that. Below are some instructions for building a good, solid bench-work for your layout, starting with a materials list and moving into instructions.

Side Tables Wood

The materials you will use include the following:

Side Tables Wood

1 4 x 8 sheet of plywood (a good size for HO scale model trains; use 5/8 inch B-C grade plywood)
3 1x4 x8' (for edge supports)
4 1x4 x8' ripped into 1x2 stock (for 5 joists, plus bracing)
1 1x4 x10' ripped into 1x2 stock (for bracing between legs)
1 2x4 x8' ripped into 2x2 stock (this is for the table legs and is enough for a max height of 48 in)
1 box (100) 1-3/4" dry wall screws (will use 72 of these)
8 1/4x3" carriage bolts (for bolting on the table legs)
8 ¼" washers (for table legs)
8 ¼-20 nuts (for table legs)
1 pint yellow carpenter's glue (not white, use yellow since it is waterproof)

The tools you will use include the following:

2 saw horses (optional)
1 saw (Almost anything will work - a saber saw or "Skil" saw or table saw or hand cross-cut saw. If buying a first saw, a saber saw will probably be most useful in future model railroad endeavors.)
1 3/8" reversible electric drill
1 bit to fit drywall screws
1 5/16" drill bit (for carriage bolts)
1 1/8" drill bit for pilot holes
1 adjustable crescent wrench or open or closed end wrench to fit nuts
1 carpenter's square

You'll start with the tabletop, a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood. This is a good size for HO scale model trains, because it allows space for a track layout a bit more interesting than a mere oval or circle. You only need one good side on the plywood, and while that does need to be fairly smooth, it doesn't have to be grade-A perfect, since you'll be covering it up with track, accessories, scenery and other details. So go with the B grade for the good side, it's less expensive than A.

This large sheet of plywood is rather floppy on its own, so it needs support to stiffen it before you set up a model railroad on it. The first step is a frame around the outer edge. Build the frame first, and then screw the plywood to it. Take two 8 foot lengths of 1x4 and two 3' 10-1/2" lengths. You will want to screw and glue them together, because nails tend to work themselves loose with the vibrations of the model railroad and the occasional jostling of the table.

Prepare the end of an 8' side piece by drilling two pilot holes where screws will go into the shorter end pieces. Don't make the holes too big. They should be just large enough to pass each screw. Prepare the end of one of the 3' 10-1/2" end pieces by rubbing yellow carpenter's glue into the end grain until it's fairly well-saturated. Then run an additional bead of glue along it. Press onto end of 8' piece and screw together using pilot holes. Repeat at each of the four corners. Allow to dry.

Now, take the sheet of plywood and screw it onto the frame, good side up (B side up, C side should be touching the frame). Do not glue the plywood to the frame, as you may need to remove it from the frame later to build a lake or adjust the levels of your track.

You can drill this together in two ways; you can use a "pilot drill" and No 8 x 1-3/4 in flathead wood screws. Or you can use drywall screws with regular drill and drywall screw bit. With drywall screws, they are self-tapping, meaning you will not need to predrill any holes except if you are at the end of a piece of lumber and trying to avoid splitting.

Now the plywood has been stiffened on the edges and you are ready to add joists to firm up the middle. Turn the apparatus over so it is frame-side up. Take five 1 x2's the same length as the short end pieces (3' 10-1/2") and screw them at intervals to the side pieces of the frame in such a way that they bear up against the plywood. Do not screw them to the plywood tabletop.

Now you are ready for the legs and bracing. You need to decide on the height you want your layout to be, whatever seems appropriate for HO scale model trains. For ease of viewing those lifelike details on the model railroad, it's common to make the display height fairly tall, just below eye level. I've seen recommendations ranging from 42 to 56 inches. (For comparison, most writing desks or dining tables are around 28 to 31 inches.) If your viewing audience includes children, consider a lower height, such as 30 inches. Also consider ease of working on the center part of the scenery and track.

Cut four 2 x 2's to your chosen height. Contrary to what you might think, the legs should not be mounted at the corners of the plywood. You will have a much sturdier table with less flex in the middle if you mount the legs 20% inward on each end. For an 8 foot long table, this means mounting the legs 19" from each end, measured along the long side.

Turn the table upside down (frame side up). Drill one 5/16" hole all the way through the side piece of the frame and into a leg. Leg should be flush with the plywood, and hole should be about ¾ to 1" up from the plywood. Stick a carriage bolt through from the frame side. Using fingers, tighten down a washer and nut onto the inside of the leg where the carriage bolt is sticking out. Now check that the leg is at right angles, using a carpenter's square and carefully drill a second hole to keep it there.

The second hole should be ¾ to 1" from the other edge of the frame (the edge temporarily facing up) and you will add another bolt-washer-nut. Now use a wrench to tighten both nuts down solidly. Repeat the process for the other three legs. You really want to be sure to use the square to measure in both plains that all four legs are perpendicular.

Now you could stop here, but even so the table would be a bit wobbly, and you don't want that when you are setting up your model railroad. For maximum stability, you will need to install additional bracing. At each of the shorter ends, use "X" bracing. Take two 1 x 2's and fasten them as close to the floor as possible on one end and as close to the table as possible at the other (this makes four braces in all).

Then you will want to install double bracing on the long sides. Attach a 1 x 2 as close to the floor as possible and run it to the other end of the table. Attach another 1 x 2 as close to the floor as possible and attach it to a point towards the middle of the table (this makes eight braces in all). This bracing may seem unsightly, but it is worth it. You can hang cloth curtains from the edge of the finished table to hide it, if you like.

Finally, if your floor is not level and even, you can make the legs adjustable. Drill a 5/16" pilot hole into the bottom (the end) of each leg in the center. Hammer in a ¼" T-nut. Now thread on a ¾" bolt. This makes each leg independently adjustable to compensate for the unevenness in the floor.

Congratulations! The fine new bench-work for your model railroad is now complete! Turn the table over and you have a solid and sturdy platform on which to enjoy constructing your new layout for HO scale model trains.

Chunky Furniture - The Benefits of Filling Your Home With Solid Wood Furniture

Chunky furniture is fabulous to look at; with its clean lines and presence it gives an impression of strength to complement every type of home, whether contemporary or traditional. If made from the highest quality reclaimed hardwoods, it is strong and hardwearing enough to last several lifetimes.

Side Tables Wood

Top quality reclaimed timbers are best as they can create pieces of great beauty and durability. Reclaimed teak wood is the ideal medium for such products including living room, dining room and bedroom furniture, where the texture and colouring of the wood makes each piece truly unique.

Side Tables Wood

Chunky living room furniture

Chunky living room furniture is used on a daily basis; therefore it needs to be strong enough to withstand the inevitable wear and tear. Herein lies the real beauty of solid hardwood chunky furniture: not only will it stand the uses and misuses of daily life, it will actually look all the better for it. If you mark it, scratch it, or even if you manage to dent it, the piece will simply bear the marks and display them with pride for many years to come.

Being the hub of any home, the living room is where you tend to spend the majority of your time, with family or friends, watching TV or entertaining. It therefore makes sense to invest in good quality furnishings that beautify and enrich your surroundings. With an elegance and charm that is all their own, chunky hardwood furniture pieces like coffee tables, side tables and TV units, do just that, lending their innate beauty to a room set, regardless of your choice of decor.

Chunky dining room furniture

Chunky dining room furniture constructed of solid hardwood is strong, durable, robust and built to last. It is perhaps this last attribute that makes chunky furniture most desirable for the dining room. A dining table, sideboard or dresser, that has been passed down through the generations will carry the marks, scars, trophies and memories of countless special occasions. As the pieces become family heirlooms, these events can be looked back upon, with great fondness.

The dining table is the key piece within any dining room and it should be a conversation piece in its own right. With a beautifully constructed table, made from the finest of reclaimed hardwoods, the conversation is sure to flow. And if the wine should flow too, no problem! Hardwoods especially Teak are particularly resilient to damage from liquids. Red wine spilt on a dark stained Teak table will only add to the character of the piece, creating yet another talking point.

A beautiful range of rustic reclaimed teak furniture in both traditional and contemporary designs is available as are matching sideboards, bookcases and display units to complete your look.

Chunky bedroom furniture

Chunky bedroom furniture creates the perfect environment in which to relax and unwind. The functionality, durability and reliability of the pieces lend to a feeling of stability, strength and security, feelings that are particularly important to have as we drift off or awaken from sleep.

The single most important furniture piece within any bedroom setting is of course, the bed itself. It is vital that this be as sturdy and supportive as possible. Our need to feel comfortable and safe as we sleep is primal and is an inbuilt protection mechanism that, despite thousands of years of evolution; we have not yet shaken off.

Chunky Wooden Furniture

A wide range of beautiful and stylish chunky wooden furniture exists to help you co-ordinate and achieve the desired look for any room in your home. Everything from dining tables and chairs to sideboards, display units to benches, coffee tables to bookcases and side tables. Uses Of Table Saws

There was a time just a few decades back when a table saw was considered to be an expensive tool. They only came in one size and that was large and you really couldn't touch one for less than several hundred dollars US. All that has changed though in recent times because you can now find much smaller, and far more affordable table saws selling for less than 0 US.

Side Tables Wood

Now you really can do just about anything that a table saw will do with a hand held circular saw. The difference with a table saw though is that your final results don't end up looking like crap. It's the table and the guide fence that allows you to make perfectly straight and nice even cuts, no matter what your experience level is.

Side Tables Wood

Now the first handy thing that you will enjoy doing with your table saw is turning larger dimensioned pieces of wood into smaller dimensioned pieces. For instance if you're a crafter and you need a strip of, say 1'' by 1/2 '' lineal for a project, you can simply rip your own out of perhaps a 2x4 with your table saw.

Then for making boxes, wooden garden planters, or anything else for that matter that requires "tight and accurate" wood joinery, once again you have your table saw. Simply adjust the blade to the angle you desire, set your rip fence for the width and make your cuts. Even with an unsteady hand, the rip fence will insure that your finished pieces will all fit together perfectly.

Table saws are also the perfect tool for cutting perfectly straight "grooves" in wood stock. Perhaps in the side of a cabinet project where you want the shelves to ride in without having to use unsightly nails or screws. Once again, the rip fence and the table are your guide to professional results.

Just lower the blade down to the depth that you want your grooves to be then set your rip fence to proper width. After that has been done you're set to do your first pass that will leave you with a groove as wide as the blade. Move the fence over another 1/8'', make another pass and now your groove is ¼'' wide. Move the fence as any times as you need to get your grove to the width you're after.

There are a few things that you will have to keep in kind though as you use your table saw, and one is that the quality of your blade makes a huge difference in its overall performance level. Invest in a nice "fine toothed" steel carbide blade, and make sure that you never run it through a nail or screw because that will break the tiny carbide spines on your blade.

Also remember to lick up a good pair of safety goggles, and wear them every time you make a cut, and make sure that you use a push stick if a piece requires that your hand go near the blade. Lastly, if you have long hair use something to tie it back when you're using any type of power cutting tool, lest you run the risk of having your hair caught in the blade.

Kitchen Table - Choose Yours Wisely

A lot of effort goes into selecting dining room tables but kitchen tables are the ideal place to start the family's day each morning and end the day in the evening. It lacks the formality of the dining area. It's convenient to all the items you need for breakfast and a great casual conversation spot. So, why not put more focus on this space. Selecting the right kitchen table is something that needs to be taken on while thinking of a lot of important details.

Side Tables Wood

Space - Find a kitchen table that fits the space you have. Not every modern kitchen can handle a full sized table. You may need to get a bistro table (especially nice for only two living in the home) or a folding leaf table that can be widened when you need it to hold more people, or can stay small and cozy for regular use. Take the chairs and arm rests in to account as well. You may not think about it when you're making the initial purchase, but if a chair has arm rests that will make it take up more space around the table since those chairs will likely not be able to be pushed all the way in.

Side Tables Wood

Shape - there are all the typical shapes to choose from - oval, round, square and rectangle. There are even some kitchen tables that can be two, by extending a square or circle with a leaf that can turn them into ovals and rectangles. If you have little kids around the house, you may want to keep your focus on oval and circular tables so they don't run into the corners of a square or rectangle ones.

Sometimes you may not be sure what shape of table to put in your kitchen. You can do a little test to see what works best. Get a large piece of paper (or a number of pieces of paper taped together). Shape them to the size of common kitchen table measurements. You can set this down on the floor in your kitchen and get an idea of how a kitchen table with the same shape would fit. But don't just stop at the table, You need to remember there will be chairs as well, so make some shapes that replicate chairs and see if all the pieces will comfortably fit in the space you have. If not you can adjust the size until it is a better fit and know what your limitations are in table purchasing.

Style - You shouldn't have a problem matching a kitchen table to the cabinets and décor in the room. Just make sure the table style fits. You don't want a modern table to clash with a traditional décor style and visa versa. If your kitchen is dark stick with dark etc...

Material - If you have kids have something easy to clean. You don't want to find out that a cup of cocoa left a ring on the surface because you didn't protect the wood table top. Instead, look into Formica, or tile that will put up with more abuse and use, especially with a busy and young family. If you do have wood, you will need to keep it covered to protect it.

Wood Sheds And Barn Lore

Did not Melville's blacksmith, he of the Pequod and the tormented pursuit of the White Whale, seek refuge upon a time in a "leaning, dilapidated barn"?

Side Tables Wood

So too Henry, the young enlistee from the Red Badge of Courage, did he not fondly recall his pre-war routine when he was "making the endless rounds from the house to the barn, from the barn to the fields, from the fields to the barn, from the barn to the house."

Side Tables Wood

The ubiquitous barn was once a key symbol in the iconography of 19th century America and a convenient marker for the literature of the day. Stolid, sturdy and seemingly everywhere, the American barn was as commonplace in Civil War America as a filling station or grocery mart might be today.

America, of course, in those centuries past, was an agrarian society whose commerce was driven by toil in the fields rather than time clocked in a factory A mere 15 percent of the population resided in urban areas during the mid-1800s and even northern Manhattan hosted farms and livestock through the early 1900s.

The barn served as the factory of that now forgotten day. This oftentimes ungainly edifice was a central, multi-purpose structure that housed foodstuffs and livestock as well as the tools and accouterments of a very difficult trade. In today's day and age, however, when more than 80% of Americans reside in an urban area, the once indispensable barn has been reduced to a curiosity or photo op for those who travel from time to time out to the countryside.

The wooden barn is being chased into ignominy by technology and the demanding standards of an industrialized society. Once a prominent citizen in the architectural neighborhood of agrarian society, the barn has become naught but an orphaned structure left to fend for itself against the severity of the elements.

So, as you consider the purchase of a wood shed assembly kit for your backyard or even your place of business, be mindful that you can renew the tradition, lore and practicalities of the common barn by selecting those wood shed options that were inspired by the design and construction of the country barn.

The Cupola

Consider placing a cupola upon your barn. Once used as a simple, albeit very efficient, convection system, the cupola was originally designed to draw dry, cold air into the confines of a barn while allowing wet, warm air to escape those same confines.

Suppliers such as Suncast Corporation and the Little Cottage Company provide cupola assembly kits that can be fitted to a wide array of the wood sheds that are designed by both of these respective companies. Another supplier, EZup, goes a step farther in this regard and offers a cupola assembly kit that can actually be utilized as a very simple convection system to enhance the airflow of an EZup wood shed.

These cupolas are well appointed and very attractive. Many even have authentic copper roofs. For those with an eye for design, breaking up a flat roof line with an icon such as a cupola from days past can significantly alter the look and feel of that wood garden or storage shed in your backyard.

The Roof Line

American barns used a wide array of roof lines that created both support for the entire structure as well as additional storage space in the upper reaches of the structure itself. The most recognizable roof line on a barn is probably the gambrel roof. This roof lines falls from both sides of the peak of the roof at two different angles as it approaches the walls of the barn. The bulging effect that is created in the roof permits additional storage space in a barn's loft.

EZup and the Little Cottage Company both produce wood shed assembly kits that are covered by sturdy gambrel roofs. Not only do these wood sheds wear the mantle of a barn, these wood sheds also have increased storage capacity due to the bulging effect of the these very roof lines. The Little Cottage Company, in particular, produces a 12 x 24 wood shed assembly kit with a gambrel roof line that actually looks like a small barn.

Another common roof line for a barn is the placement of a gable over the door ends of the barn. A gable, for this purpose, is a triangle that peaks at the highest point on the roof. This east-west orientation for the barn allows for larger barn doors under the increased height of the gable itself.

Each of Suncast Corporation, The Little Cottage Company and EZup produce wood shed assembly kits that place the shed doors on the gable side of the shed. This door placement increases the height of the doors and the size of the equipment that can be stored in these very wood sheds.

The Barn Door

If the barn is the pie of American iconography, then the barn door is the lemon in that pie.

Cowboy westerns in the 50s and 60s all utilized the barn door as a commonplace prop in their repetitious plottings. Countless adages utilize the opening or closing of the barn door as a metaphor for polemics both good and evil. It is truly the inveterate barn door that has become a symbol unto itself of a time that is fast receding in our collective memories.

Fortunately, the Suncast Corporation, The Little Cottage Company and EZup each offer a wide range of double barn doors that can hang as a banner on their numerous wood shed assembly kits. Suncast even makes an enormous 6' x 6' double door that provides entry to just about any type of lawn equipment through what is an enormous portal for a wood shed.

Time passes, of course, and common conventions fall slowly to the wayside in the wake of novelties that are new and improved. The common barn, however, seems to have the historical heft and appeal necessary to maintain its status as an American icon. One venue for this longevity is the ability to build out backyard wood sheds with cupolas, roof lines, barn doors and the other numerous indicia of the American barn.

Most of us live upon parcels of land that were once the province of farmers from long ago. Presumably these farmers would enjoy espying a barn-like structure on their former holdings of land.

Sawhorse Plans - A Wood Sawhorse is Better Than Plastic

My friends don't think much about the idea of finding a set of sawhorse plans to build a sawhorse for the workshop. Maybe they remember their dads all bent over cutting boards with a handsaw. They probably think power tools have made the sawhorse obsolete. Maybe they think the plastic kind work fine. I say that a wood sawhorse may be one of the most valuable (and forgotten) shop accessories I will own. Here are a few reasons why.

Side Tables Wood

Workbench vs Sawhorse: Which is Stronger?
Unlike the straight legs on a workbench, sawhorse legs tilt outwards from the top (splayed). Mechanical engineers know that this immediately adds strength to any kind of structure. Add to that a couple of side braces (gussets) and it becomes an indestructible frame that can effortlessly hold hundreds of pounds. A workbench, on the other hand, is more likely to wobble over time, and will need to have its joinery tightened up periodically.

Side Tables Wood

Get Up Close to Your Project
My biggest complaint with most shop work tables is that one side of my project always seems to be unreachable. Using a sawhorse can solve this problem quite nicely. The open-frame design lets me easily move around a project during construction, and move in close to sections that would otherwise be hard to reach.

Using a Sawhorse as a Clamping Station
Seems like I'm always searching for someplace to clamp a board. I try to use the work tables in my shop, but sometimes my clamps don't fit over the edge of the table top very well, and I end up with lose, floppy boards. Now I'm convinced that the best place to clamp boards in on a sawhorse. The 2x6s and 2x4s that most sawhorses are built from make perfect surfaces for clamping. And 2x lumber is thin enough that I can get by using smaller clamps. That definitely saves me a few bucks at the home center.

Using a Sawhorse to Cut Large Panels
Cutting down large sheets of plywood can be a pain. If I'm not down on my hands and knees in the garage, then I'm precariously trying to balance a 4 x8 sheet on the edge of a table. If I can get a couple sawhorses built, I will instantly have one of the best panel cutting stations I've seen. Simply add a 1x4 board across the bottom of each sawhorse to serve as a support for the plywood sheet. Then position a sawhorse at each end of the panel and lift the plywood up onto the supports. Be sure to clamp both sides of the plywood to the sawhorses.
